Janet Horwell – Postpartum Doula in New Zealand
Doula | Pronouns: she/her
Based in Nelson/Tasman, Aotearoa | New Zealand. Supporting families online worldwide.
About
Hi, I’m Janet, a mama, wife, sister, cousin, friend and postpartum doula. My work is grounded in a simple but often unmet truth: mothers deserve to be deeply supported.
After years of building community and exploring the ways we care for women and families, my focus naturally turned to one of the most overlooked transitions in a woman’s life, the postpartum period.
Through my own experience of becoming a mother while working full-time, I felt firsthand how isolating and disorienting this time can be. What I needed wasn’t more information or conflicting advice, but consistent, human, and compassionate support.
As a doula, I offer care that centres the mother as well as the baby. This might look like practical help, emotional support, space to be heard, or guidance grounded in both experience and evidence.
My intention is to contribute to a culture where mothers are held, not just holding everything, and where support is continuous, trusted, and deeply human.
Training, Qualifications, Professional and Lived Experience
I am a postpartum doula through Newborn Mothers and a matrescence practitioner through Matresence Foundations certificate from Matrescence NZ.

Testimonials
I found Janet's support made a huge difference in my first few weeks post partum. She has great empathy and genuinely cares for her clients. I had an extreme hormone drop a few weeks before her planned visit and she called me to provide support (where I just cried to her over the phone) and she sent links to helpful resources. She checked in with me multiple times after that as well. At her visit, she was happy to help with whatever i needed. She cooked, we went for a walk and had a great chat. The social connection from someone who really gets post partum and how hard it is made a difference too. Janet is not only warm and empathetic, but she has great insight and advice that she shares only if you're comfortable.
I highly recommend her service, to give yourself an additional support post partum who will actually help and make a difference when you really need it!
